    Alex Luijten (1955) is 19 jaar als hij zijn biologische vader – een Armeniër in Frankrijk – leert kennen. Luijten is Hagenaar die op Terschelling woont en ‘op de wal’ werkt. Een veelzijdige ondernemer, maar ook directeur van een basisschool in Kijkduin. Als hij 44 jaar is besluit hij de achternaam van zijn vader aan te nemen. Na veel bureaucratische rompslomp wordt Alex Luijten Alex Peltekian. Een bijzondere naam met een exotisch tintje.

    Na het overlijden van zijn vader komen er in Frankrijk papieren boven water waaruit blijkt dat de Peltekians tot een zeer vermogende familie in Turkije behoorden. Tot de eerste wereldoorlog, waarin Turkije zich van haar Armeense minderheid ontdoet, daaraan een einde maakt. De overlevenden van Alex’ familie komen in Frankrijk terecht.

    Door de ontdekking van het bestaan van Peltekians in Libanon komt bij Alex de behoefte naar boven op zoek te gaan naar het verhaal achter zijn naam. Dat brengt hem van Beiroet naar het Turkse stadje Dörtyol in de province Hatay, waar zijn vader in 1912 werd geboren, en waar de familie overal bezittingen had. Zijn de sinaasappelgaarden van zijn grootvader nog te vinden? Is er nog iemand die zich de Peltekians herinnert? En wat is er met het huis van de familie gebeurd?

    De reis leidt tot buitengewone, een enkele keer spannende, ontmoetingen met de huidige bewoners van Dörtyol.

    • Subject matter of the documentary film:
      Alex Luijten (1955) is 19 years old when he gets to know his biological father, an Armenian living in France. Luijten was raised in The Hague, but is now living on the isle of Terschelling, off the northern coast of Holland, and still working `at the shore.’ He is a multi-sided entrepreneur, but also the head of a primary school in Kijkduin. At the age of 44, he decides to take on his father’s family name – Alex Luijten becomes Alex Peltekian – a new name with a foreign flavor. He then decides to find out the story behind it.

      After his father’s death, papers and deeds emerge in France revealing that the Peltekians used to be a wealthy family in Turkey, at least until World War One, when Turkey proceeded to rid herself of her Armenian minority. The survivors of Alex’s branch of the family ended up in France.

      Alex learns about the existence of Peltekians in Lebanon and gradually becomes more interested in the story behind his name. In the film, the quest brings him via Beirut to the Turkish town of Dörtyol in the Hatay Province, where his father was born in 1912. The Peltekian family had property everywhere. Can his grandfather’s orange plantation still be found? Does anyone still remember the Peltekians? And what happened to the family’s estate?

      Alex’s journey leads to remarkable and, occasionally, tense encounters with the present inhabitants of Dörtyol.
