Ontwikkelingen Armeens taalonderwijs in Nederland

Amersfoort, 2 februari 2008 – Tijdens de tweede conferentie van de Commissie Armeense Taal en Cultuur van de Federatie Armeense Organisaties Nederland (FAON), in Amersfoort, is besloten een aantal ontwikkelingen in gang te zetten om het Armeense taalonderwijs in Nederland zowel voor kinderen als volwassenen te verbeteren. Het betreft het oprichten van Steunpunt Armeens Taalonderwijs, het opzetten van een Website Armeens Taalonderwijs, het uitwerken van de mogelijkheden voor het Armeense taalonderwijs in het Voortgezet Onderwijs en tenslotte zal met de volksuniversiteiten gesproken worden over het aanbieden van cursussen Armeens taalonderwijs voor volwassenen.

Met deze acties is, onder voorzitterschap van prof. dr. J. Weitenberg van de Leidse Universiteit, een vervolg gegeven aan de eerste taalconferentie in 2007, die vooral een inventarisatie opleverde van de Armeense taallessen in Nederland, de werkwijze en de knelpunten.

Het Steunpunt Armeens Taal Onderwijs is bedoeld om alle leraren, die verspreid in het land Armeense les geven beter te faciliteren en te ondersteunen. Het Steunpunt gaat o.a. zorgen voor lesmateriaal, landelijke bijeenkomsten, gastlessen over verschillende onderwerpen, voorzieningen en informatievoorziening voor leraren enz. Doel is door een sterkere organisatie van de leraren de lessen beter en aantrekkelijker te maken en daardoor ook meer leerlingen en ouders te motiveren Armeense taallessen te volgen.

Er is een examencommissie gevormd onder leiding van prof. Dr. J. Weitenberg, die de mogelijkheden en de te stellen eisen gaat onderzoeken voor een centraal examen voor de Armeens taal in Nederland met bijbehorend diploma.

Een website zal worden opgezet om alle informatie over het Armeense taalonderwijs voor iedereen toegankelijk te maken en later ook voor andere meer educatieve doeleinden.

Ook is er een Werkgroep Voortgezet Onderwijs ingesteld, die een traject gaat inzetten om te komen tot invoering van het Armeens als moderne vreemde taal in het voortgezet onderwijs (VMBO, HAVO en VWO) tenminste daar waar veel Armeense kinderen onderwijs volgen. In Nederland bestaan dergelijke lessen al in bijv. het Italiaans, Spaans, Russisch, Arabisch en Turks. Vooralsnog gaat het om een oriëntatiefase; er is voor de werkgroep uiteraard nog een lange weg te gaan en veel zal ook afhangen van het enthousiasme van ouders en kinderen voor de taallessen en van de bereidheid van scholen hieraan gevolg te geven. De Commissie Taal en Cultuur ziet echter goede mogelijkheden voor Armeense taallessen op school in enkele plaatsen in Nederland. Met toestemming van het Ministerie van Onderwijs kunnen dergelijke lessen voor sommige groepen op den duur zelfs leiden tot het Armeens als een examenvak voor de betreffende leerlingen.

Tenslotte zal ter voorziening aan de groeiende vraag naar Armeense taallessen voor volwassenen binnenkort gesproken worden met de organisatie van Volksuniversiteiten. Doel is dat Volksuniversiteiten op enkele plaatsen in het land ook cursussen Armeens in hun cursuspakket gaan opnemen.

De Commissie Armeense Taal en Cultuur stelde vast dat met de geplande acties en voorzieningen en met het enthousiasme van de deelnemers aan de conferentie het Armeense taalonderwijs is Nederland de komende tijd op verschillende terreinen vooruitgang zal boeken. In het voorjaar komt men opnieuw bij elkaar op gedane stappen te nader te bespreken en uit te werken.

Developments of Armenian Language Teaching in Holland

Amersfoort, 2 February 2008 – During the second conference of the Committee of Armenian Language and Culture of the Federation of Armenian Organisations in The Netherlands (FAON) in Amersfoort, it was decided to put a number of plans into action to improve the situation with regard to teaching of the Armenian language to both children and adults. These include the establishment of a Armenian Language Education Assistance Centre, setting up of a Website concerning the teaching of Armenian language, examining the possibilities of teaching the Armenian language in the curriculum of the Dutch secondary schools and finally, to discuss the matter with the Adult Education Centres (Volksuniversiteit) to offer courses of Armenian Language for adults.

These steps are in pursuance of the First Language Conference in 2007 under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. J. Weitenberg of Leiden University, which produced an inventory of the Armenian Language courses in the Netherlands, working methods and the bottlenecks.

The Armenian Language Education Assistance Centre is intended to facilitate and lend support to all teachers, who teach Armenian in different parts of the Netherlands. This Centre shall take care, for example, of provision of teaching material, organisation of meetings at country level, providing of guest-courses on different subjects, provision of information facilities for teachers etc. The aim is thus to provide for higher quality courses and making them more attractive by a stronger organisation of teachers, thereby creating a motivating factor for the youth and the adults alike to follow Armenian Language courses.

An Examining Committee under the leadership of Prof. Dr. J. Weitenberg, has been formed, which is going to study the requirements for a centrally held examination for Armenian Language in The Netherlands with corresponding diploma.

A website will be set up to make all information concerning teaching of Armenian accessible to everybody and also to use the site in the future for other educational purposes.

In addition to these steps, a Secondary Education Working Group has been set up, which is going to start an investigation plan with the final goal for introducing the Armenian Language as a modern foreign language in the Dutch secondary education system at least in places where great numbers of Armenian children live. In Holland, such lessons already exist for example for Italian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Turkish languages. For the time being the Working Group will carry out an orientation research. Naturally, the Working Group will have a long way to go and much will also depend on the parents’ and children’s enthusiasm for language courses as well as the preparedness of the schools to entertains such projects.

The Committee of Armenian Language and Culture, however, sees good possibilities for introduction of Armenian courses in schools in a number of places in Netherlands. Such courses can, with the permission of the Ministry of Education, in the long run culminate into designation of Armenian as an examination subject for the students concerned.

Finally, taking into consideration the growing demand of the Armenian Language courses for adults, negotiations will start soon on this subject with the Organisation of Adult Education Centres (Volksuniversiteit). The idea is that these Centres, in a number of places in the country, include the Armenian language courses into their educational packages.

The Committee of Armenian Language and Culture took note of the fact that by the planned measures and provisions and with the enthusiasm of the participants in the conference, the teaching of Armenian Language in the Netherlands is going to register progress in the coming years in various fields. In the spring, the participants will get together again to discuss the steps taken and make follow-up plans.
