Op donderdag 22 januari 2009 neemt professor Jos Weitenberg afscheid als bijzonder hoogleraar in de Armeense Studies aan de Universiteit van Leiden in verband met zijn pensionering. Er bestaat gelegenheid het afscheidscollege van de professor Weitenberg bij te wonen. Wijze van aanmelden en andere gegevens treft u aan in de aankondiging van de universiteit.

Professor Weitenberg is sinds 1980 verbonden geweest aan de Universiteit Leiden als medewerker bij de afdeling Indo-Europese taalkunde. Hij specialiseerde zich vooral op het Hittitisch en Armeens en de vroege geschiedenis van Anatolië. In 1996 werd hij, met ondersteuning van de Gulbenkian Foundation benoemd tot buitengewoon Hoogleraar Armeense Studies. Vanaf 2005 werd de leerstoel gefinancierd door het Leids Universitair Fonds.

Professor Weitenberg heeft zich naast zijn academische werkzaamheden altijd op velerlei manieren actief betoond in de Armeense gemeenschap in Nederland. In de jaren tachtig en negentig heeft hij regelmatig Armeense taallessen gegeven bij de Stichting Ararat in Amsterdam. Hij is de auteur van een Nederlands-Armeense Woordenlijst (1985). Verder is hij o.m. lid van het Comité van Aanbeveling van het 24 april Comité van de Federatie Armeense Organisaties Nederland en maakte hij recent nog deel uit van de begeleidingscommissie van het onderzoek “Armeniërs in Nederland”. Hij is van nabij geïnteresseerd in de ontwikkeling van het Armeense onderwijs in Nederland. Verder geeft hij lezingen en organiseert cursussen over de Armeense cultuur. Hij benadrukt daarin vooral de oude banden tussen Armenië en Europa.

Het college zal worden gehouden op 22 januari 2009, klokke 16.15 uur in het Groot Auditorium van het Academiegebouw, Rapenburg 73 te Leiden.
Na afloop van het afscheidscollege bestaat gelegenheid om de heer en mevrouw Weitenberg de hand te drukken tijdens een receptie in het Academiegebouw.

Farewell lecture by armenologist Professor Jos Weitenberg

On Thursday 22 January 2009 a ceremony will be held at the University of Leiden to say goodbye to armenologist Professor Dr. Jos Weitenberg, because of his retirement. You may participate to the farewell lecture by Professor Weitenberg. For registration and other details see the following announcement by the university.

Professor Weitenberg has been a scientific staff member at the department of Indo-European linguistics of Leiden University since 1980. He is specialised in particular in Hittite and Armenian and the early history of Anatolia. In 1996, he was appointed, with support of the Gulbenkian Foundation as extraordinary professor of Armenian Studies Chair. From 2005 the Leiden University Fund finances the Chair of Armenian Studies.

Beside his academic activities, Professor Weitenberg has been always actively involved in many ways in the Armenian community of the Netherlands. In the eighties and nineties he was regularly teaching Armenian language at Ararat Foundation in Amsterdam. He is the author of a Dutch-Armenian list of words (1985). Furthermore he is, among others, member of the Recommending Committee of 24 April Committee of the Federation of Armenian Organisations of the Netherlands and just recently he was a member of the Advisory Commission of the survey of Armenians in the Netherlands. He is closely interested in the development of the Armenian education in the Netherlands. Moreover, he gives lectures and organises courses on Armenian culture, emphasising especially the old ties between Armenia and Europe.
