Vereniging Abovian 25 jaar met Festival van de Armeense film
Diaspora Minister stuurt felicitaties

Den Haag, 19 juni 2009 – Precies 25 jaar geleden, op 19 juni 1984, werd de Armeense Culturele Verenging Abovian in Den Haag opgericht. De Armeense Minister van Diaspora Zaken, mw. Hranush Hakobyan, heeft ter gelegenheid hiervan de Vereniging een felicitatiebrief gestuurd. Zij spreekt in haar brief haar waardering uit voor de activiteiten die de Vereniging Abovian gedurende deze 25 jaar.

Dit jaar organiseert de Vereniging ter gelegenheid van het 25-jaar bestaan een festival van de Armeense Film. Voor dit festival werkt de Vereniging samen met het Filmhuis Den Haag en het Armeense Golden Apricot Filmfestival. Gedurende twee weken zal er een overzicht van de Armeense cinema gepresenteerd worden. Het festival vindt plaats vanaf 22 oktober in het Filmhuis Den Haag aan het Spui in Den Haag.

De Vereniging bereidt ook enkele publicaties voor, o.a. een “Kookboek Abovian”, waarin de favoriete recepten van leden en vrienden van de Vereniging Abovian worden opgenomen. Hiermee wordt de kookcultuur van Armeniërs van verschillende herkomstlanden in al zijn diversiteit samengebracht. De Vereniging nodigt iedereen uit om mee te doen aan dit project en een recept in te sturen.

Gedurende de afgelopen 25 jaar heeft de Vereniging Abovian voortdurend bijgedragen aan het Armeense culturele leven in Nederland. Naast de wekelijkse bijeenkomsten en de Armeense taal-, geschiedenis- en cultuurlessen in het Clubgebouw Abovian, heeft de Vereniging talrijke culturele activiteiten georganiseerd, aan diverse evenementen deelgenomen en publicaties verzorgd. Via email worden door de Vereniging nieuwsberichten over Armeense zaken en aankondigingen van Armeense activiteiten in het Nederlands, Engels en Armeens verspreid.

Een speciale bijdrage van de Vereniging Abovian aan het Armeense culturele leven in Nederland is door de jaren heen geleverd in de vorm van themadagen en seminars over verschillende Armeense onderwerpen. Hierin wordt aandacht besteed en eer bewezen aan Armeense dichters, schrijvers, componisten en andere Armeense prominenten. Daarnaast worden allerlei andere bijeenkomsten gehouden en feesten op de Armeense feestdagen. Het belangrijkste doel van de Vereniging is het levend houden van de Armeense identiteit, taal, cultuur en tradities.

De Vereniging Abovian heeft altijd nauwe relaties onderhouden met het moederland Armenië en met Armeense sociale en culturele organisaties in de diaspora om over en weer elkaar te helpen en om culturele programma te realiseren. Vele artistieke groepen en individuen werden uitgenodigd voor de culturele programma’s. Maar ook wetenschappers, functionarissen, sportmensen, studenten etc. hebben het Armeense Culturele Centrum van Abovian in Den Haag bezocht. Zeer gedenkwaardig was de dag waarop de Armeense journalist Hrant Dink bij Abovian een volle zaal toesprak, in november 2006, minder dan 2 maanden voordat de tragische moord op hem plaatsvond.

De Vereniging is een van de oprichtende organisaties van de Federatie van Armeense Organisaties in Nederland (FAON) en neemt actief deel aan het 24 april Comité van de FAON. Samen met andere Armeense organisaties in Nederland en wereldwijd werkt de Vereniging Abovian samen voor de herdenking en de erkenning van de Armeense genocide.

Het 25- jarig bestaan van de Vereniging valt samen met de 200-ste geboortedag van de grote verlichter, schrijver en pedagoog Chatjatoer Abovian, waaraan later dit jaar op gepaste wijze aandacht zal worden besteed.

25th Anniversary of Abovian Association with Armenian Film Festival
Message of Congratulation by Diaspora Minister of Armenia

The Hague, 19 June 2009 – Exactly 25 years ago, on 19 June 1984, Abovian Armenian Cultural Association was founded in The Hague, The Netherlands. On this occasion the Diaspora Minister of Armenia, Mrs. Hranush Hakopyan, sent a letter of congratulation to the Abovian Association. In the letter she expresses her appreciation for the activities of Abovian Association in these 25 years.

For this anniversary the Association is organising an Armenian Film Festival in cooperation with the “Filmhuis Den Haag” in The Hague and the “Golden Apricot Film Festival” in Yerevan. The Festival will present an overview of the Armenian cinema and will take place from 22 October 2009 for two weeks in the “Filmhuis Den Haag”.

The Association also plans to publish some books this year, among others a “Cookbook Abovian”, which will include the favorite recipes of members and friends of the Association. By this way the diversity of cooking culture of Armenians from different countries of origin will be brought together. Everybody is invited to contribute to this project, by sending in a recipe.

During the past 25 years Abovian Association has continually contributed to the Armenian cultural life in the Netherlands. Apart from weekly meetings and lessons of Armenian language, history and culture at the Abovian Cultural Centre, the Association has organised and participated in numerous cultural events, published periodicals. The Association distributes now per email news on Armenian issues and announcements of Armenian activities in Dutch, English and Armenian.

A major contribution of the Association to the Armenian cultural life in the Netherlands is the holding of thematic days and seminars on various Armenian topics. The Association pays hierby tribute to Armenian poets, writers, composers, artists and other prominent Armenians. The Association also regularly organises meetings and parties on most Armenian Holidays. The main goal of the Association is to keep the Armenian identity, language, culture and traditions alive.

Abovian Association has always maintained close relations with Armenia and Armenian social and cultural organisations of the diaspora for mutual assistance and for realisation of cultural programmes. Many artistic groups and individuals have been invited to participate in the cultural programmes. Also scientists, officials, sportsmen, students etc. from Armenia and other countries have visited the Abovian Cultural Centre in The Hague. A memorable day was the visit of Armenian journalist Hrant Dink in November 2006, less than two months before his tragic assasination, to Abovian Cultural Centre, where he addressed a full audience.

Abovian Cultuaral Association is one of the founding members of the Federation of Armenian Organisations in The Netherlands (FAON) and an active member of 24 April Committee of the FAON. Abovian Association cooperates with other Armenian Organisations in the Netherlands and worldwide for the commemoration and recognition of Armenian Genocide.

The 25th anniversary of our Association coincides with the 200th birthday of Armenian great enlighter, writer and pedagogue Khachatur Abovian. An appropriate tribute will also be paid to this anniversary later this year.
